"Dance Theatre of Harlem" The history, rise, near fall, and revival of this unique dance troupe as seen through the eyes of its founder Arthur Mitchell, and various members past and present. "The Soldiers Who Built the ALCAN Highway"
After Japan struck Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, it was of the utmost urgency that
Alaska, which had already been attacked by the Japanese in the Aleutians, be made less
vulnerable. The only way to do this was to build a highway linking airstrips that already
existed. Nearly 11,000 soldiers were sent to build the 1,500-mile Alaska Canadian
(ALCAN) Highway. Of them, one third were black troops who dealt with bad weather,
poor equipment, and prejudice, but still performed admirably, often above and beyond
the call of duty.
