Instant Messaging At Work
Forbes.com staff, 07.26.02, 1:40 PM ET

NEW YORK CITY - Instant messaging is no longer just for your teen-age daughter and her hundred closest friends. Companies are beginning to implement the technology to talk to their workers and customers.

And it's hardly idle chat. Clothing retailer Lands' End, for one, says IM has been a definite boost to the bottom line. Bookmark this landing page to read all of Forbes.com's reporting on how corporations are putting instant messaging to work.

The irony is that the corporate users of IM may be able to turn a profit from it more easily than companies like AOL (nyse: AOL - news - people ), Microsoft ( nasdaq MSFT) and Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ), which first popularized it as free public software.
