Priceline Promotes Boyd; AMD Chairman Sanders Buys Stock NEW YORK - Doers and doings in business, entertainment and technology: Name your own price Internet travel company Priceline.com (nasdaq: PCLN - news - people ) named 46-year-old Jeffrey Boyd president and chief executive. He assumes the titles in a very inauspicious time. The company's stock lost more than 25% of its value earlier this month after posting results that were badly wounded by weakness and discounting in the airline industry. The firm announced it was going to combat the challenges by cutting 15% of its staff. Boyd was Priceline.com's president and had shared the company's CEO responsibilities with Chairman Richard S. Braddock. Braddock, 60, will continue as priceline.com's non-executive Chairman. Boyd has been with the firm since 2000. More... Is the economy cooking a rebound for the tech sector? That's what some microchip CEOs are smelling. Last week, National Semiconductor (nyse: NSM - news - people ) head Brian Halla pinned down what he expects to be the exact date of the semiconductor industry turnaround: June 21, 2003. Working with a Stanford University professor and about two decades of semiconductor sales data, Halla came up with his prediction by building a mathematical model that incorporated everything from chaos theory to deterministic progression. Advanced Micro Devices (nyse: AMD - news - people ) Chairman Jerry Sanders is also banking on a pickup. Sanders bought 300,000 shares of stock in of his semiconductor maker last week, according to a U.S. regulatory filing at $6.89 per share. The deal has paid off--at least in the short term: AMD shares closed at $8 yesterday on the New York Stock Exchange. More...
