Layoff Tracker Archive
Edited by Penelope Patsuris, Forbes.com, 01.29.02, 7:00 PM ET

NEW YORK - The Forbes.com Layoff Tracker launched Jan. 1, 2001, to tally job cuts at companies listed on The Forbes 500s, and by the time it was reset for the New Year it had hit 986,424. That represents nearly 4% of the 25 million people employed by those firms.

And as 2002 takes off, the raft of dismissals shows little sign of abating. Theoretically, the national unemployment rate is supposed to be a lagging economic indicator, meaning that even though it's climbed to 5.8%, things could be turning around. But pundits and analysts are now speculating that the current recession won't begin to recede until the second half of this year, so unfortunately it could be many months before the Layoff Tracker's numbers begin to diminish.

Click on each month for a breakdown of job cuts.
